One of two lead subjects in Netflix's How to Fix a Drug Scandal is lab chemist Annie Dookhan, who was described by her Boston colleagues as a speedster "superwoman." It wasn't until Dookhan's arrest on September 28, 2012 that it was clear why she was able to churn out so many results: she was falsifying reports and "dry labbing," aka visually identifying samples without testing. After serving three years for obstruction of justice and evidence tampering, Dookhan was released on parole in April 2016. Per the Boston Herald, Annie Dookhan is now focusing on family and "adjusting to normalcy" (though as How to Fix a Drug Scandal notes , Dookhan hasn't actually spoken to the press since her 2013 arrest). Nicolas Gordon, Dookhan's attorney , told The Boston Herald in 2016 that he was unsurprised Dookhan only served three years of her five year sentence, since she had no prior record. In December 2011, Springfield, Massachusetts police arrested Rolando Penate for allegedly selling heroin, and the drugs were sent off to be tested by then-35-year-old drug lab chemist Sonja Farak at the Amherst lab . Farak, who later admitted she had been stealing and using drugs from the lab since 2004, said she had taken so many drugs the day she tested Penate's samples that she was seeing "colors swaying in the wind." Nonetheless, she signed the drug certificates on January 9th, 2012, helping to send Penate to prison for more than five and a half years. Farak was arrested in 2013, and in January 2014 she was sentenced to 18 months in jail for evidence tampering, plus five years of probation. Following the internet-consuming success of Tiger King , Netflix has returned with another docuseries: How to Fix a Drug Scandal , which chronicles the misconduct and subsequent arrests of Massachusetts drug lab chemists Sonja Farak and Annie Dookhan. After it was discovered that Dookhan had fabricated thousands of test results in her Boston lab and Farak had been using the drugs that came through hers in Amherst, both women were convicted and sentenced to prison (both have since been released). A series following the bizarre world of big cat ownership in America wasn’t exactly the series I was planning to get hooked on during lockdown, but here I am. Netflix’s Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has opened my eyes to a world I never knew existed. Seven episodes were clearly not enough, but as it turns out, Louis Theroux has his own documentary with Joe Exotic from Tiger King . Theroux experienced the bizarre world of GW Exotic Animal Foundation in Oklahoma, where he followed Joe in his day-to-day activities while running one of the largest big cat collections in the world.
